The Rules of Baseball – Learn Them Now!

without comments

Softball and baseball can be complex games for people to learn and understand, and there are many rules associated with these games.  The goal of this bat-and-ball game is to hit the thrown ball with a bat, and score runs by touching the series of four bases that are arranged at the corners of 90ft diamond or square.

The goal of each team is to score more runs than the opponent team, which can be done by one circuit of four bases placed on the diamond.  Nine players from the pitching team try to prevent the other team from scoring, and if the scores are tied, extra innings are played to conclude the game.

Rules of baseball vary from league to league, but the basic gameplay is quite similar.  The substitute players can be brought in the game in case of fatigue, injury or tactical reasons of current players, but once the player has been replaced, he cannot return to the game.

The infield of the game is square, but is called a diamond, and has a first base, second base, third base and home base at each corner.

Four common ways that defense teams can use to out the offensive player are strikeouts where hitter misses three pitches, fly outs where defensive player catches the ball before it hits the ground, force outs where defensive player catches the ball and reaches the base before the runner and tag outs where runner gets touched with the ball or the glove that has ball in it.

The area beyond infield in called outfield, and is usually surrounded by a wall which is 325-450 feet away from home plate.  To play the game, pitcher stands on the mound and throws ball to the hitter standing on the home plate.

The most basic rule of baseball is that it is played by two teams, alternating their turns to defense and offense, and the goal is to score maximum runs.  Though it is a team sport, baseball still places each player under unusual pressure and scrutiny.

There are many different ways to out the hitter such as flied out where fielder catches the ball hit by the hitter without ball getting bounced, strike out where pitcher throws the ball in the strike zone, put out where fielder touches the runner with the ball when he is not standing on the base, and so on.

Sabmeterics is the field of statistical study, and development of new analytical tools and new statistics of baseball.

Wins, losses, innings pitches, saves, earned run average and winning percentage are the basic pitching statistics.  First baseman, second baseman, shortstop and third baseman are the infielders, and left fielder, center fielder and right fielder are the three outfielders.

Umpires usually work in the team of four, and take turns to become the home plate umpire.  Each team must stick to the bating order throughout the game.

The batter gets three strikes, and when batter starts running after hitting, he or she is called runner who attempts to reach the base where they will be safe and can stay till the next hitter comes up.

Official scorer has the final say on every ball hit in the field of play, and this skill can be very rewarding.
